We have two basic types of waterproof coatings we apply to ensure a long lasting, aesthetically pleasing, sealed deck surface.
Crete Decking System. This five layer deck repair system is meant to go over plywood surfaces. Most decks have a wood foundation, so this system is our go to. If you have a balcony, stair, or walkway deck, this is your best bet. This is used over new decks and well as surfaces with damaged sub-floors.Flex System. This particular job in Chino Hills had a deck with an existing deck coating system, but did not have dry rot or other structural damage. It can be applied over decks in good shape that need an slight overhaul. It is applied over existing concrete surfaces, whether a slightly deteriorating decking or a pool deck. Tortoise Shell Watertight!
Have you ever thought of how some creatures are waterproof?! It is true. Take the tortoise for instance. It not only can swim underwater for ages, but it lives in a watertight home! It's shell is strong and fully seals it from pesky predators and leakage. This is a great illustration of how a deck coating should work. Ironically, one of our latest jobs was located on a street called Tortoise Shell! How fitting (pun intended) for a watertight waterproofing demonstration!
With a balcony deck situation such as this, you have to be precise.
Flashing installation. Like a tortoise shell, a watertight deck needs all of the cracks and crevices to be covered. We have expert flashing installers. We know that the perimeter needs to be secured in order to prevent seepage.If you have open sides on your balcony deck, we will install drip edge flashing. As the name implies, it allows water to sheet off the edge of your decking surface.
If your deck is enclose on four sides, like the one above, it calls for diato metal flashing. This fully secures a watertight "shell." The sloping of the deck sends any excess water into the deck drains.

Lathe. Yes, metal lathe is one of the foundational components to a strong and flexible deck coating. Perhaps you are wondering what lathe is...you have come to the right place! Metal Lathe Installation
In order to bond a waterproof decking system, you need a bridge. Lathe is exactly that.
A sturdy base is accomplished in the 3/4 inch plywood sub-floor. Polymer modified concrete need something more adhesive to bond to than wood though.Lathe Installation. We staple down 2.5 lb. galvanized metal lathe with heavy duty one inch crown staples. This gives our concrete layer a porous surface for proper bonding. It also achieves a delicate balance between flexibility and strength. Your anchored deck can flex and not crack!
We make to flattened all the staples to ensure an even surface on which the concrete layer sits. This crucial step in the waterproofing process must be installed correctly, or the remaining layers are in jeopardy of waterproof capability.
Tile Underlay. We recently finished a job where we prepared the deck for a tile overlay. Whether performing our signature layer Crete Decking System or preparing your deck coatings for custom tile with AVM 750 (see right), we have you covered!

Our latest leaking deck rescue was in Orange Ca.
The deck was leaking below. We performed the following:Removal/Resheeting of Plywood. We removed the existing deteriorating plywood and re-installed new 3/4 inch sheets.
Stucco Remove & Repair. The bottom 8 inches of the stucco was removed and replaced in order to install the Diato 'Combo' metal.- Diato/Combo Metal. This was installed along the deck to wall transition and incorporates the stucco screed. This is to make sure the wall will be ready for stucco when we are done.
Door Pans. We installed 1 two piece metal flashing door pan.
Lastly, we will be installed The Crete Decking System. This is a multi-layer waterproofing membrane designed for use over plywood sub-floors. It will guarantee no more leaking deck.
Scope Of Work:
-Fill 4 scupper drains with concrete-Staple down 2.5 galvanized metal diamond lathe-Trowel down cementitious base coat with a Desert Brand polymer additive.-Laminate using fiberglass matting & Desert Brand acrylic resin (Bonder 480)-Trowel down an additional layer of our cementitious base coat-Spray texture (Smooth/Knockdown/Orangepeel)-Seal using fortified concrete paint

We recently traveled to a job in San Clemente where we had a nightmare on our hands! The deck had a fiberglass coating with a elastomeric type painted over the fiberglass. We recommended cleaning the surface and then installing our Crete Decking System over the existing material.
This kind of hodge podge set up is a recipe for disaster. A shoddy set like this can produce leaking and dry rot. This can affect the structure. Bad news. Our solution was simple, but effective.
1) Remove the existing elastomeric deck coatings paint and fiberglass down to the plywood, to check for damage.
2) After assessing that the plywood sub-floor and flashing was not damaged, with no need for deck repair, we proceeded to apply our deck coating system.

Our crew recently traveled to Newport Beach to modify a deck coating with a pooling problem. Pooling is bad, because standing water leads to eventual dry rot and structural damage.
Sloping. This particular decking needed 3 buckets of material to fill lows spots on the deck. Decks are built with sloping, but often, if they are down improperly, it leads to standing water. So we re-sloped the deck surface properly.
Perfect Plywood Repair. We needed to repair the dry rot caused by the standing water. We removed the damaged plywood and re-install 3/4 inch tongue and groove plywood.

Old deck, new deck, heck, we do it all! We recently traveled to sunny Encinitas, where the weather is beautiful, but the decks are battered by the Pacific Ocean air. It was new construction deck, where the owner framed the door and installed the railing around the perimeter. First, we had top remove the existing stucco, in order to access the flashing underneath. It was in poor condition, so we replaced it with diato/combo metal along the house.Next, we installed custom door pan at the door threshold.
Lastly, we finished up our waterproof deck repair flashing service with drip edge flashing. This was installed along the perimeter of the deck, around the newly built railing.

Let me give you a run down on some of the main types of deck flashing and their uses.
Drip Edge. The name is self-explanatory. It is located around the perimeter's edge and it allows the water to drip off your deck! This is used when the deck has at least one open side. It has a lip on the drip side, in order to keep the water off the fascia board.

L Metal. Again, this deck flashing is self-descriptive. It is usually placed up against walls. It fits snugly on the deck to wall transition. It keeps the water out of your cracks.
Diato/Combo. As a substitute for L metal, where there are stucco walls. The stucco lies on the top part of the deck flashing, to give you a flush look.
Door Pans. These protect your door threshold from any water seepage. At Prestige Deck Coating, we build custom pans to suit your particular needs!
