Defining The Problem

It's true, tiles are beautiful. Yet, they can be expensive in more than one way. But, the problem isn't cost as much as the grout. Like any other concrete based material, tile deck grout seeps water. If what's underneath is not waterproof – big problemo.



So, while you are enjoying the look and feel of your tile, underneath there could be pooling water. Pooling water = no bueño. After a while, it causes dry rot in the wood sub-floor or structural beams. If that wasn't bad enough, oftentimes a deck repair with a tile underlay does not allow for salvaging. You get zapped twice.

AVM Tile Underlay System

AVM Industries has developed a fabulous system for waterproof tile underlay. Below are their basic steps (for those interested in in nitty gritty, go here). Prestige Decking is certified to install this excellent waterproofing solution.



1) Install a 6 inch wide membrane strip at deck perimeters, joints, cracks, sheet metals, drains, scuppers, posts, door ways, entry ways, etc.

2) Use a wider strip if the 6" strip will not provide adequate waterproofing protection.

3) Install the AVM Membrane 700 to all the remaining surfaces with a minimum 2 inch overlap at the seams and completely overlapping the 6 inch strip

4) Next, protective coating (optional with the following exception: required when membrane is installed directly to plywood substrates).

5) Protective layer: apply the AVM Crete 6700 over the cured membrane 700 at least 1/8 of an inch thick. Now, your waterproof tile underlay system is complete!

In one of our latest projects, we installed a new deck coating system.

Simple Steps In The Balcony Deck Coatings System

REPAIR. We first removed the existing coating that was worn. Underneath, we discovered a gaping hole in the existing sub-floor, near the wrought iron railing. Since it wasn't too wide of a hole, a full plywood re-sheeting was unnecessary. Thus, our expert technicians cut out the culprit, and performed a dry rot repair to patch the hole.



LEVELS 1-2. Since the existing plywood sub-floor was in good shape, we moved on to installing our custom, six-level waterproofing system. The first level, adhering diamond shaped metal lathe. After stapling down this tough stuff, we give balcony deck coatings strength and a bonding property as a prep for the first coat of concrete. Level 2, we apply a polymer modified concrete layer for a powerfully strong coating.



LEVELS 3-6. In order to make your balcony deck coatings watertight, we utilize fiberglass. With a thick matte of boat-style fiberglass, mixed with waterproof bonder, the concrete level is fully sealed. Next, we add another strength and flexibility layer of concrete to sandwich the fiberglass. Level 5 is a texture coat for grip and aesthetic appeal. Finally, your choice of custom color adds charm to your new deck coating system. This paint sealer is concrete fortified and watertight as well!

So, just what is deck waterproofing anyway? Thankfully, there are many good systems available. After research, experimentation, and on-the-job application of different methods – we chose to adapt the Desert Crete philosophy to O.C. deck waterproofing, deck coating, and pool deck resurfacing projects. The How

These are your 6 easy steps to having a successful O.C. deck waterproofing experience:

Prep – Repair and restructure. If you have holes, soft spots, rust or other water damage, the first step is to build a solid foundation. With versatility, we do everything from drain and flashing repair/installation to full plywood re-sheeting. Once the structure base is secure, we are ready to lay down our system.

Laying Down Lathe

1. Metal Lathe. Next, we securely staple down metal lathe to accomplish two things. One, a strong base. Two, for flexibility. The lathe bonds the concrete and bolsters the springiness.
2. Concrete. Using polymer modified concrete as our base layer, you get double security. Like the lathe, it is strong and flexible. It especially gives a solid core to apply the further layers.
3. Fiberglass. This is the key layer. Fiberglass insures that your O.C. deck waterproofing project will be sealed from all leakage. Both bonder resin and mesh fiberglass are applied to seal the deal.
4. Concrete 2. Sandwiching the fiberglass to add a layer of strength, we apply another skim coat of polymer modified concrete. As would be expected, this O.C. Deck waterproofing system is rock solid.
5. Texture. For grip and aesthetics, we pray on a last layer of polymer modified concrete. Optionally, you can choose your preference of style.
6. Paint Sealer. The lat step is the most gorgeous. Choose from 16 color choices to enhance the beauty of your new O.C. deck waterproofing masterpiece. Twice applied, this is concrete fortified paint sealer is waterproof as well!
