How to waterproof plywood decking

There are a number of ways to waterproof plywood decking. You can stain and use some sort of sealant. You can try to seal the
deck by covering it with waterproof paint. Both of these methods have
their weaknesses. Neither can really guarantee a waterproof seal, and
neither lasts very long. Yearly maintenance is required, at least.

Prep.
We repair any soft spots or damaged parts of the plywood decking using
3/4 inc plywood sheeting. Then we are ready to install our custom system
over the top of the plywood substrate foundation. Deck flashing is
installed along the perimeter to insure against water penetration. Next,
we staple down 24 gauge metal lathe to strengthen the foundation,
provide some flex and provide a bonding agent for our next layer.

1) Our first layer of the system is polymer modified concrete. It gives a rock solid "sidewalk" for your deck!

2) We then "sandwich the sidewalk" with a fiberglass/bonder layer to completely waterproof the deck.

3) To add one more layer of stability, we finish the sandwich with the top bun, another skim coat of polymer modified concrete.

4)
We then use a pneumatic hopper gun to spray a beautiful patten of
concrete non-slip coating. This is also called the texture coat.

5)
Finally, your choice of color adds that touch of flair to your one drab
plywood decking. Two coats of concrete fortified paint sealer finalize
the deck waterproofing system.

Deck Flashing Frenzy

One such deck flashing frenzy took us to  San Juan Capistrano Ca. This particular job consisted of three metal repairs.

Door Pans.
For this decking, we were faced with the necessity of complete removal
and replacement of the metal door pans. We custom design our pans to
ensure they are a perfect fit for your door threshold. This also allows
us to fully waterproof this crucial area of the deck coatings.

Drip Edge Flashing.
This deck had an open ledge. This means the excess water sheets off the
edge. Because of constant contact with water, poorly installed drip
edge flashing often rusts out. This deck flashing frenzy was staring to
get fun!

Diato Metal.
Three sides of the deck were framed with a wall. Not a problem. We use
diato/combo metal to keep the water out of the cracks. This type of
flashing works well with stucco or any paneled wall.

Beautiful Balcony Deck Repair

San Juan Capistrano Ca is known for its rustic beauty. Rolling hills

Balcony Deck Repair

We traveled to an apartment complex to perform a balcony deck repair project that turned out beautiful!

Plywood Re-Sheeting.
There was a quite a bit of rust intrusion, so we had to rip out all of
the existing coating down to the studs.We then replaced the plywood with
3/4 inch sheeting. This allowed us to lay a solid foundation for our
deck waterproofing system.



Door Pans. The the flashing was rusty, so we installed a new door pan underneath the main  door.



Drip Edge Flashing.
This deck was open on three sides, so we tore out he existing drip edge
flashing and replaced it. In order to match the fascia board color, we
repainted it as well.

 

Railing repair.
This deck had wrought iron railing. Not a problem for Prestige Decking!
Depending on the damage to the deck coating, you have a few options. We
can remove the railing and reinstall it after our service. We can work
around it. If the railing is rusty, we can repair the railing, weld it, and then reattach it.

Crete Deck Coatings System.
The final step in your San Juan Capistrano Ca balcony deck repair
service is our waterproofing membrane. This is a five layer waterproof
coating designed for use over plywood sub-floors.

1) metal
lathe is stapled on top of the plywood to help the coatings adhere as
well as provide flexibility and strength to the final product.
