Damp Deck – Science

Now you know some of the signs that you could have a damp deck. But what might be causing it? Once your deck gets damp, it is too late.

When you have a deck coating system installed, water can go to one of three places. One, it sheets off the deck. Every properly constructed deck should have gradual sloping that removes excess water. Two, the excess water pools on the decking. If your deck was poorly constructed or the deck waterproofing installers did not do their job right – water will pool in certain areas on the deck's surface. Three is the worse case scenario. Excess water first will pool, then gravity takes over. It will seep into the deck coating itself and pool underneath the concrete – on the plywood substrate.

Damp Deck – Scare

Water seepage is bad! For one thing, you often have no idea that you have water underneath your deck coating. Second, it begins to rot away at the wood structure. Thus, a damp deck or worse – dry rot!

Pool Waterproofing Membrane

Pool Waterproofing Membrane

We have developed our own pool waterproofing membrane system. Its five-step application process is as follows:

1. Repair. Many pools we see have deck damage. Whether cracks, bumps, or decay, we can help. Using a "V-cut" grinder, we level the surface. Then, we apply our epoxy bonder in the crack, in order to make the surface watertight, flexible, and strong. 
2. Waterproofing. What makes us a cut above many companies, is our use of fiberglass. Next in the process, we apply fiberglass matting with a specially formulated bonder. This produces a waterproof surface. Also, it protects the previous crack repair.
3. Strength. To ensure a strong, safe walking surface, we next use a concrete layer. Our polymer modified concrete is professionally grade. Additionally, it covers and protects the fiberglass.
4. Texture. We spray on another coat of concrete as texture. This serves two purposes. One, it creates an anti-slip, grippy surface. Two, with your choice of texture pattern, you have a beauty surface to enjoy. A safe and sophisticated pool waterproofing membrane. 
5. Paint. Finally, we enhance the aesthetics and keep a cool surface. This is achieved with two coats of pigmented concrete/masonry floor paint and sealer.

Waterproofing Plywood Decks

Most patio, balcony, and roof decks in Orange County have a wood sub-structure. This means that there are either 2x4 slats running across the beams or there is plywood sheeting on top of the frame. Prestige Deck Coating is an expert at waterproofing plywood decks. We can install our deck coating system over the top of either types. We can also waterproof concrete decks.      

 

Waterproofing Plywood Decks – Repair

Repair. Before we apply our waterproof decking system, we often perform deck repair. We can fix dry rot sections or fully replace plywood sheeting. This is crucial. You can't have a watertight deck coating with making sure the sub-structure is solid.  

Waterproofing Plywood Decks – System

System. Over the top of the plywood sheeting, is a our 6 layer Crete decking system. We have developed it over many years onsite.  

Here is a run down on how we waterproof plywood decks:

-Staple down 2.5 galvanized metal diamond lathe. This gives it strength and flexibility.

-Trowel down cementitious base coat with a polymer additive. Forming the foundation, this makes your deck rock solid.

-Laminate using fiberglass matting & acrylic resin. The fiberglass layer makes your deck waterproof, just like a boat or surfboard. It is placed over the concrete base to protect it from potential leakage and pooling under the layers closer to the surface.

-Trowel down an additional layer of our cementitious base coat. For strength and coverage of the fiberglass, there is another cement level.

-Spray texture of your choice. The texture layer gives a grippy finish and is appealing aesthetically.

-Seal using waterproof, fortified concrete paint. Our two coats of waterproof concrete paint sealer add an extra waterproofing quality. More importantly, you get to choose your color of choice to match your home.

On A Mission: Healthy Decks

At Prestige Deck Coating we are on a mission – making healthy decks. So many deck coatings in South Orange County are ill. Well, ironically, we just finished a minor surgery at Mission Hospital – a standard re-coat procedure. We installed our custom deck coating system on a large roof deck.

Healthy decks are a necessity for the well being of your home.

Like people, decks come in all shapes and sizes. With a sick person, you need a proper doctor to assess, diagnose, and recommend the best care for the patient's condition. The same is true for your patio, balcony, or roof deck – as well as stairways and walkways. As a courtesy, Prestige Deck waterproofing will come to you. Like each person needs a personal health care plan, the same is true for maintaining healthy decks.

To achieve healthy decks, sometimes you need an overhaul.

Thankfully, the health of this deck was not an ER situation. It was a critical operation though. A leaking roof deck coating calls for immediate attention. Especially, at a hospital where life saving medical equipment needs to stay dry to work. This roof decking had an old Dex-O-Tex membrane system.

The pervious coating was a light weight concrete that had accumulated water pooling, that led to leaking. This is a common symptom of worn deck coatings. When the waterproof membrane wears down, exposing the concrete, water naturally pools, then seeps into the sub-structure. This means at least a dry rot repair, possibly a need for full plywood re-sheeting, or worse yet – structural repairs.

On A Mission_ Healthy DecksFirst, we performed a coating removal. Next, we installed the Desert Brand Flex System. This is a modified version of our 5-layer Crete system. We put down fiberglass over the existing lightweight concrete. Then we apply our polymer modified concrete to seal the waterproof glass. Last, we put a texture coat, topped off with waterproof paint sealer.

Surgery success! Mission complete – one more in a long line of healthy decks! Cured and glowing!
