Ladera Ranch Tile Deck Underlay

Tiles are beautiful but can be expensive. But, the problem isn't cost – as much as the grout. We recently installed a tile underlay system in Ladera Ranch, Orange County, CA.

Like any other concrete based material, tile deck grout seeps water.

Thus, while enjoying the look and feel of your tile, trouble could be brewing underneath. Pooling water = not nice. After a while, it causes dry rot in the wood sub-floor or structural beams. Worse yet, a deck repair

AVM Industries has developed a system for terrific tile underlay. Here are their steps  (go here for all the details).

1) Install a 6 inch wide membrane strip at deck perimeters, joints, cracks, sheet metals, drains, scuppers, posts, door ways, entry ways, etc.

2) Use a wider strip if the 6" strip will not provide adequate waterproofing protection.

3) Install the AVM Membrane 700 to all the remaining surfaces with a minimum 2 inch overlap at the seams and completely overlapping the 6 inch strip

4) Protective coating (optional with the following exception: required when membrane is installed directly to plywood substrates).

5) Protective layer: apply the AVM Crete 6700 over the cured membrane 700 at least 1/8 of an inch thick. Now your tile deck underlay is complete!

Each coating system is a waterproof decking. It is as easy as 1,2,3,4,5,6!

Level 1. First, our metal lathe system is secured to the sub-floor using 24 staples per square foot.

Level 2. Next, polymer-modified concrete is spread evenly across and bonds directly to your wood sub-floor, preparing for an unmatched watertight seal.

Level 3. Third, we add a unique feature. Often overlooked by other deck coating companies, we apply a middle fiberglass layer. This makes a perfect water and air tight seal over the polymer based concrete.

Level 4. For strength and flexibility, an additional layer of our polymer based concrete is applied on top of the fiberglass and bonder layer.

Level 5. Then, the final texture coat is carefully applied consistently on your deck, using an air pressurized hopper gun, making an even anti-slip grip on your exterior flooring.

Level 6. Last, we apply two coats of our waterproof paint sealer. By shielding your deck from UV rays and harsh rains, it stays strong in even the most intense foot traffic areas. Truly a waterproof decking delight!

Deck flashing is the like the 6th man of the waterproofing industry. If rust or damaged metal is discovered, you need to secure the perimeter from water intrusion. Some decks have such intensive dry rot and other water damage that it calls for triple threat decking! Enter Prestige Deck Coating. We are deck coating experts in Laguna Beach and beyond.

We recently employed a triple threat decking design in Laguna Beach. Three decks – one event – no excuses.

Part of this job included replacing the flashing on one deck. So, what is flashing?



Door Pans. We custom design our pans to ensure they are a perfect fit for your door threshold. This also allows us to fully waterproof this crucial area of the waterproof decking system.



Drip Edge Flashing. This deck had an open ledge. This means the excess water sheets off the edge. Because of constant contact with water, poorly installed drip edge flashing often rusts out. This triple threat decking design was starting to get fun!



Diato Metal. Three sides of the deck were framed with a wall. Not a problem. We use diato/combo metal to keep the water out of the cracks. This type of flashing works well with stucco or any paneled wall.

No Prestige waterproof decking repair is complete without our custom Crete Decking System.

This five layer deck waterproofing system has been site modified over the years for maximum potential. The basic service is as follows:



1) polymer modified concrete

2) mat fiberglass and bonder

3) polymer modified skim coat

4) pneumatic gun sprayed texture coating

5) two coats of concrete paint sealer

Defining The Problem

It's true, tiles are beautiful. Yet, they can be expensive in more than one way. But, the problem isn't cost as much as the grout. Like any other concrete based material, tile deck grout seeps water. If what's underneath is not waterproof – big problemo.



So, while you are enjoying the look and feel of your tile, underneath there could be pooling water. Pooling water = no bueño. In one of our latest projects, we installed a new deck coating system.

Simple Steps In The Balcony Deck Coatings System

REPAIR. We first removed the existing coating that was worn. Underneath, we discovered a gaping hole in the existing sub-floor, near the wrought iron railing. Since it wasn't too wide of a hole, a full plywood re-sheeting was unnecessary. Thus, our expert technicians cut out the culprit, and performed a dry rot repair to patch the hole.



LEVELS 1-2. Since the existing plywood sub-floor was in good shape, we moved on to installing our custom, six-level waterproofing system. The first level, adhering diamond shaped metal lathe. After stapling down this tough stuff, we give balcony deck coatings strength and a bonding property as a prep for the first coat of concrete. Level 2, we apply a polymer modified concrete layer for a powerfully strong coating.



LEVELS 3-6. In order to make your balcony deck coatings watertight, we utilize fiberglass. With a thick matte of boat-style fiberglass, mixed with waterproof bonder, the concrete level is fully sealed. Next, we add another strength and flexibility layer of concrete to sandwich the fiberglass. Level 5 is a texture coat for grip and aesthetic appeal. Finally, your choice of custom color adds charm to your new deck coating system. This paint sealer is concrete fortified and watertight as well!

Drip Edge Flashing. Many decks are open on one or more sides. This calls for drip edge flashing, to allow a smooth exit for excess water. The flashing is designed to sheet the unwanted water off the deck, while ensuring it does not penetrate the deck sub-floor.

Railing repair. No problem if you have a wrought iron railing! We can remove the railing and reinstall it after our service. Also, we can work around it. Rusty rails are repaired, welded, and reattached.
